Do you sometimes wonder if others share your perspectives on respect?
As I work with employees who are not getting along with others, the topic of respect comes up often in these exchanges.
Also, as workplaces become more diverse, there are varying degrees and understanding of respect at work.
While some employees may view certain interaction as okay, others may view the same interaction as insulting or disrespectful, based on how they perceive and understand their interactions.
To reduce confusion and interpersonal conflicts, it is important to revisit how we practice respect and if it may be causing stress and upset for others.
In some cases, extending greetings such as good morning is a warm gesture of hospitality, and an important symbol of respect for co-workers. While this may not be as important to other employees.
I once worked with a leader who couldn’t work with others if they didn’t proffer a greeting.
Paying attention to diversity and how we measure and observe respect is another important step on the journey to create inclusive workplace cultures and improve employees’ well-being at work.
I discussed this on the show last week. Here's the recording with some examples to note.
