Can Your Team Survive the Storm of Politics and War?

It never surprises me that while some people are ecstatic about a situation, others can be devastated and disheartened because they have different ideals or narratives that fuel their emotions. When this divergence in perspective occurs within a team or organization, it can lead to division, discord, and ultimately affect work outcomes. The ripple effects of this can include decreased productivity, lower morale, and strained communication.

The recent US election is a prime example of an external event that has the potential to impact team unity. Whether directly or indirectly, it can bring differing views and emotions to the forefront, making it essential for leaders to take proactive steps to foster understanding and consensus. If you’re noticing signs of division or tension in your team post-election, now is the time to act. One of the most effective tools for this is a Team Charter.

My Experience with Team Charters

As a Conflict Analyst, I have been creating team charters for organizations for over two decades. These charters have saved many agreements and acted as crucial reminders to hold team members accountable and realign the team when differing ideals surface. Through this work, I've seen firsthand how a well-crafted team charter can guide teams through times of uncertainty and help maintain unity and focus.

What is a Team Charter?
A Team Charter is a collaborative document created by team members and leaders that outlines the team’s mission, values, roles, responsibilities, and expectations. It acts as a mutual agreement and a guiding framework that promotes trust, accountability, and alignment within the team. Unlike an unwritten understanding, a team charter solidifies what is agreed upon and serves as a consistent point of reference.

10 Reasons Why Your Team Is Not Collaborating Well

Why Your Team Needs a Team Charter Now

1. Promotes a Unified Purpose
A team charter helps realign team members with the collective mission and objectives of the organization. In moments of uncertainty or tension, reminding the team of their shared purpose fosters unity. This shared focus helps bridge differences and channel individual efforts toward common goals.

2. Clarifies Roles and Responsibilities
Confusion over roles can exacerbate frustration and division. A team charter clarifies the roles of each member, ensuring that everyone understands their duties and how their work contributes to the larger objectives. This transparency helps prevent conflicts and reinforces accountability.

3. Reinforces Team Values and Norms
Different interpretations of team values and behaviors can create discord. A team charter sets clear expectations for behavior and communication, establishing a shared understanding of what is encouraged and what is discouraged. This alignment helps create a positive work environment where team members can collaborate more effectively.

4. Enhances Communication and Collaboration
Clear communication is at the heart of any successful team. A team charter outlines how team members should communicate, whether in meetings, via email, or through other channels. By establishing these norms, team members are better equipped to share ideas, address concerns, and provide constructive feedback. Improved communication fosters trust and collaboration, even among those with differing opinions.

5. Provides a Framework for Accountability
Holding team members accountable can be challenging, especially in high-stress or emotionally charged situations. A team charter includes an accountability framework that ensures progress is tracked and responsibilities are met. This structure helps teams stay on course, even when external influences create distractions.

6. Supports Team Well-being
A team charter can significantly contribute to the well-being of team members. When everyone knows their role, feels heard, and works in an environment of mutual respect, stress levels decrease, and job satisfaction increases. Clear expectations and an inclusive atmosphere help team members feel secure and valued, which, in turn, supports their mental and emotional well-being. This can lead to better resilience, lower burnout rates, and a healthier work environment overall.

Addressing Team Division During Tense Times

During emotionally charged times, such as after elections or other significant events, teams can become a microcosm of the larger society. Opinions, beliefs, and emotions can seep into the workplace, causing tension and affecting team dynamics. A team charter serves as neutral ground, refocusing the team on shared professional objectives and values and helping to defuse potential conflicts.

Building Resilience with a Team Charter

Creating a team charter is not just about immediate benefits; it’s an investment in the team’s resilience. By having a structured approach to roles, values, and expectations, the team becomes better equipped to handle future challenges. The charter serves as a reminder of the team’s shared vision, ensuring that even in the face of adversity, members can find common ground and move forward.

Getting Started with a Team Charter

If your team hasn’t created a charter yet, now is the time. Start by scheduling a meeting where all team members can contribute their perspectives on the team’s mission, values, and goals. Engage an external consultant, if needed, to facilitate the process and ensure all voices are heard. By creating an environment where everyone feels seen and valued, your team will be able to lay the groundwork for a strong, unified, and productive collaboration.

Conclusion

In times of division and uncertainty, teams need to come together and refocus on their shared purpose and values. A team charter is a powerful tool that aligns team members, clarifies expectations, and reinforces the collaborative spirit needed to succeed. With my experience of over two decades in facilitating team charters, I can confidently say that these documents are essential for keeping teams accountable and unified when different ideals surface. By taking the time to develop and implement a team charter, leaders can ensure that their teams remain cohesive, resilient, and capable of great work—no matter what external challenges may come their way.

Things to Consider

  1. Do you have the luxury to wait and see if people feel better or do you need to step up as a leader and remind them why you work together?
  2. Are there norms and conversations that maybe need to be adjusted to make work a safe and inclusive environment for all?

Action Steps

  1. Consider creating a team charter to help your team heal and become resilient after a major event.
